Jerusalem Bus Station Attack: Israeli Police Shoot, Kill Gunman

Tensions have been high on Jerusalem’s streets this week with a man believed to be an Islamic militant opening fire inside a bus station in the predominantly Arab neighborhood of Issawiya Wednesday, seriously wounding one Israeli and wounding four others.

After the attack, Israeli police shot and killed the gunman. The assailant was identified as Suheil Awadi, a 30-year-old Hamas member from East Jerusalem. Israeli officials took to Twitter to condemn the attack and call for calm and refrain from violence.

Israel has warned that Palestinian attacks, such as shootings and stabbings, are up 30 percent so far this year.

The Jerusalem bus station attack was the fourth major West Bank stabbing this week. Palestinian media reported that Israeli authorities were searching for a wounded Palestinian in his 30s who witnesses said was the assailant.
