Authorities in the West Bank are investigating an apparent gun attack that left one man dead and a child injured after a shooting on a Palestinian car, according to Israeli authorities.

The assailant shot and killed Nasser Hijazi before turning the gun on himself, an Israeli military spokeswoman said.

The alleged attacker, whose identity is not yet known, has a long criminal record and was on probation, according to the spokesperson for the military, Brig. Gen. Motti Almoz.

The 19-year-old Palestinian man who drove the car and a teenage boy in the vehicle are in critical condition, Almoz said.

Police commander Major General Motti Almoz told reporters the incident happened Thursday afternoon as the teenager was driving his vehicle near the settlement of Halamish.

The Palestinian driver was believed to have left the settlement to meet a friend at a nearby shopping center. At some point, the man was confronted by a man.

“The person (the Palestinian driver) did not see coming out of the bushes the same way the passenger side (vehicle) driver did not see him coming out, shot the driver and then decided to shoot himself,” said Almoz.

Military spokesperson Maj. Gen. Ronen Manelis told reporters the incident took place near the settlement of Halamish, about a mile from the settlement of Talmon, in the West Bank.

Talmon has about 100 Israeli settlers living in prefabricated housing in the middle of a Palestinian village.

A representative of the family of the driver, Aloach Hijazi, said his uncle Nasser Hijazi was a security guard at the Alon Military Base outside Tel Aviv. The man was on his way to a wedding at the time of the attack, the representative told CNN.

“We came to the wedding with Nasser as the security guard. He was supposed to take the security guard (home) that night, that’s what he was going to do,” the representative said.

Israel’s Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely paid tribute to the driver at the funeral.

“They murdered him because he was a security guard. Why did they kill him?” she said, according to local media.

Local police forces will lead the investigation.

The Palestinian Authority had no immediate comment.
