Twenty five years is a long time to live.

Capturing images of a culturally vital milestone will take time.

The Society of Image Editors is launching an online initiative in an effort to celebrate some of the world’s most memorable images of the last quarter-century of Arab world activism.

The series, titled ” The Year That Was ,” will travel through the various dimensions of the movement that has been reignited by the strikes, protests and the Tahrir Square uprising of 2011.

The images in the compilation cover the year in which Arab-American writer Ta-Nehisi Coates identified the region as “the moral center of the planet.” The project was curated by social justice activist Imani Perry

15 of the photos, which represent the top-rated images on both Twitter and Instagram, were selected for inclusion in an exhibit which opens on December 7, 2017 at the Exploratorium Museum in San Francisco.
